Ackerman Pulls Liberal Democrat's Wool Over Republican Party

Dick Ackerman, aka "Tricky Dicky",  vouched for the leftist Democrat Doug Chaffee at a recent fundraiser for Doug that was hosted by Renick Cadillac (James & Leonard Renick) .  Now Orange County Republicans are re-thinking the motives behind the heir-apparent chair of the OCGOP.

Ackerman, a career politician and member of the GOP's old guard, took some time off from helping his party so he could pinch hit for the Democrats on behalf of Fullerton's leftist mayor.

Maybe when current OCGOP chair Scott Baugh steps down the above image will be mounted on poster board for the Republican Central Committee.  They should know who the traitors are within their party.

As you might recall (pun intended), crony-capitalist Ackerman was the puppet master of Larry Bennett (currently running on a slate with Chaffee) who chaired the doomed RECALL NO campaign in 2012.  Ackerman has been known as the Fullerton King-Maker after giving us the dipsticks mentioned in the previous post- Don "I'm Just Resting My Eyes" Bankhead, Dick "Don't Step On Your Weeny" Jones, and Pat "Pat Down Pat" McKinley.  Ackerman was also the lobbyist behind the OC Fair Grounds land grab and the former taxpayer funded ($11.5-mill) RDA monstrosity of Saint Anton Partners on Santa Fe.  Its purported he was "let go" from the law firm shortly after these lobbying efforts came to light.

The next time you are in the market for a Cadillac or Subaru, you might want to think about whose pocket you are lining.

Walter Myers III: Davenport should be afforded a measure of grace

Here we go again. Republican Party Central Committee member Marilyn Davenport, of the 72nd Assembly District, recently sent an email to a select group of people with an image depicting President Obama’s face superimposed on a child ape in a “family portrait,” consisting of father, mother, and son apes. The caption underneath reads: “Now you know why -- No birth certificate!” Party Chairman Scott Baugh rightly and firmly spoke out against this email in an article published in the Orange County Register. The story itself includes a screenshot from Channel 2 News coverage, and the O.C. Weekly ran the story as well. So there is much wrangling over this incident, and in my capacity as the incoming Chairman of the OC Republican Party American Dream Outreach Committee (pending official committee approval), I would like to speak out on this matter. But first let’s put some context around this incident.
In the Register article, there was mention that this was the “third charge of racism among Orange County's conservative-leaning political class in recent history.” The first was in 2003, and the second in 2009. So this is hardly a regular occurrence, and in each case the offender, who acted alone and on their own accord, either resigned or was voted out of office. The 2009 case was regarding then Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose. Grose sent an email from his personal account, with an image depicting a watermelon patch in front of the White House, to some family members as well as a black woman, Keyanus Price, with whom Dean had worked on a committee. After talking with Dean about this a few months back, it became clear to me that Dean meant no harm in sending what was intended to be a bit of good-natured ethnic humor, which he deeply regretted later. If his intent was to send a racist message, then it would make absolutely no sense to send this to a black woman. Yet Price demonstrated a complete lack of grace and goodwill towards someone who obviously held her in high regard and simply wanted to share a laugh. Was this an appropriate action for an elected official? It was not well-advised, but any construal of racist intent in this case, in my view, is tenuous at best, and wholly cynical at worst. We have come too far in race relations to have an image such as this divide us.

Now the picture that Davenport sent, I think, is of a completely different kind, because there is a clear historical view of blacks being seen as little more than apes who were less evolved than whites. It was the naturalist Charles Darwin, author of the iconic book The Origin of Species that established the concept of the evolution of species, who later hypothesized in his book The Descent of Man (published in 1871) that the “civilized races” would one day exterminate and replace the savage races of the world (and yes, I suffered through read both books). In this book he ascribed the same evolutionary status to Negroes, Australians (Aborigines), and gorillas. This book was cited for many years as providing the scientific basis for racism, culminating in the eugenics movement, which was highly popular in the early decades of the 20th century. Notable eugenicists include Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, and the most extreme of them all, Adolf Hitler of Nazi Germany. So hopefully this provides clear context as to why the image Davenport sent might be considered highly offensive.

It is not my belief that Davenport’s intention was to make a racist statement, as I know some of the people she sent the email very well, and none have given me any reason to believe they are racists. Moreover, I am not the type of person who is always on the watch for racists because I look at overall character, and if someone is indeed a racist or has some other undesirable trait, it will eventually display itself in their actions in some manner. However, I do believe that Davenport demonstrated an incredible lapse in judgment by forwarding an email with such a disrespectful and hurtful image, and it is simply inexcusable that she would not know how incredibly offensive that image was. If I were in the same position, not only would I have deleted it immediately, but I would have also become suspect of the person who sent it and asked them explicitly to never send an email of that type to me again, lest our friendship end at that moment. There is simply no place for this type of image (particularly for conservatives), whether in private or public, regardless of what one believes about Obama’s place of birth or policies (and I say this as someone who abhors most of his policies). There was a line that Davenport crossed, and as an elected official there is no defense for her crossing this line, even if unintentional. Nonetheless, whereas Dean Grose was afforded no measure of grace and forgiveness, my suggestion is that since Davenport has apologized for sending this email, which was sent in a private capacity with no party involvement, she be afforded a measure of grace that was unfortunately denied to Dean.

* The "Baugh Manifesto" is an interesting story in its own right. OC Republican Party Chairman Scott Baugh announced in January 2010 that the Party would not support or endorse any candidate who took public employee union money or support. It seemed to be gaining traction but after the November 2nd election it was discovered that several OC candidates received support from both the OCGOP as well as public employee unions. Among them is Fullerton's newly sworn council member, Pat McKinley. McKinley was one of 3 officially endorsed GOP candidates who is also the retired chief of police from Fullerton. He benefited from playing both sides of the aisle.

Fullerton's own congressman, Ed Royce, plaid a significant role in the Fullerton city council election. He opened what was dubbed as the "North OC Republican Party HQ" with help from the California Republican Assembly and Republican Womens Federated. He opened the retail office space to ALL candidates who were registered Republicans, thereby nullifying any possible advantage that the endorsed candidates may have had over the non-endorsed candidates.

Marty Burbank, Barry Levinson, Roland Chi, Aaron Gregg, and Don Bankhead were all given ample room for their signs and literature at the North OC HQ. Part of the trouble may have come from Royce's decision to endorse his old pal Don Bankhead, a non-GOP endorsed incumbent. How could Royce open his little shop of horrors to Bankhead without inviting ALL of the republican candidates? Royce's decision helped one Democrat, Doug Chaffee, nearly win a seat on the council.

In the future, the OCGOP should pull their endorsement for candidates who receive public employee union support if the candidates do not make a public rejection of the union support. Congressman Ed Royce should either get on board with the OCGOP and support ONLY their endorsed candidates or he should stop calling himself an OC Republican.

** The anti-union saber rattling was a real problem for good and bad candidates alike. In the 2010 Primary Election we saw retired OC Sheriff's lieutenant and chief of San Clemente police services go toe-to-toe with a deputy chief of police from Anaheim and the appointed sheriff, Sandra Hutchens. Hunt solicited and received public employee union support while as did deputy chief Craig Hunter- both Republicans. Sandra Hutchens, a former Democrat, received considerable support from Los Angeles County area Democrats as well as L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca, also a Democrat.

2010 also brought the public employee unions home to roost. The California Republican Party's Spring 2010 Convention was paid for in large part by public employee unions. Needless to say, the OCGOP was well represented at the convention.

Fullerton Republicans must come together with their money and actions to bring quality leadership to the community. We don't need more retired public employees and we do not need crisis managers. We need conservative leaders who will keep Fullerton out of the troubled waters that lie ahead.

Associated Press: EU Court condemns Irish ban on abortion

The AP is reporting that the European Court of Human Rights (strange name considering their ruling!) ruled Thursday in a judgment that harshly criticized Ireland's constitutional ban on abortion violates the rights of pregnant women to receive proper medical care in life-threatening cases.

The AP report says that: "The judgment from the Strasbourg, France-based court will put Ireland under pressure to draft a law extending limited abortion rights to women whose pregnancies represent a potentially fatal threat to their own health."

Although the headline, similar ones appearing on numerous sites and papers, appears to be a lift on all abortions, is misleading, the fact remains that elective abortions are still illegal throughout the island nation. 

Abortion as a means of birth control or as a means for minimizing the unintended consequences of a woman's actions finds no home in Ireland as it should be in the United States. 

The notion that "it's a woman's body" and therefore we must all allow for mothers to murder their children is painfully flawed.  Abortion should be reserved only for those who are gravely ill, the decision for which should be made by a licensed medical doctor based on survivability of the person and perhaps the patient's preference. 

Selective abortion as a means of birth control should be prosecuted as first degree murder.

The Republican Party of Orange County - Who Makes It Tick and Why

The Orange County Republican Party, or OCGOP, is organized and defined by its Central Committee.  The Central Committee is made up of members elected by voters who represent party members.  Anyone who fills out a voter registration card has an opportunity to choose a political party affiliation or they can "Decline To State" any affiliation. 

The Central Committee elects committee members to positions of leadership.  Currently, the OCGOP Central Committee is lead by the following:

Every two years Republican voters in the 72nd Assembly District, which includes all of Fullerton, have an opportunity to choose new leadership.  Current 72AD Central Committee representatives include the following:

There are also ex-officio members who have a certain standing within the party.  Our State Assemblyman, Chris Norby, is one such member. 

Each Central Committee member has a single vote which is used to direct party policy.  For example, the Central Committee had to vote on the current Principles:

Inalienable Rights: We believe that man's "rights" flow from the Creator and the rights of life, liberty and justice cannot be legitimately granted or rescinded by men.

Self-Government: We believe that the only answer to the current moral decline that our nation now faces is a return to the beliefs and standards of morality which our founding fathers placed into the Constitution. We believe with the framers of that document when President Adams stated, "This Constitution will not work except with a religious people." We understand that the concept of self-government begins with governing one’s self first, then family, community, state, and nation.

Education: We believe in the rights of parents to a quality education for their children. We support parental choice to create competition among the schools. We must insure that no school or teachers union can compromise the education of our children or advance a particular political agenda at the expense of our future generation’s educations.

Taxes: We believe that the federal tax system is abusive to the American people while discouraging investment and growth. We believe in growth-oriented tax policies which would gradually eliminate punitive income taxes and move our tax system in the direction of use taxes and sales taxes only.

Free Enterprise: We believe in the free enterprise system as the best hope for men and women to fulfill their economic hopes and dreams. We know that the free market is the most efficient and the least costly system to deliver the highest quality goods and services at the lowest price to the consumer. We will support only those who support the free enterprise system through legislation to reduce or eliminate intrusive government intervention in the marketplace.

Family: We believe that the traditional American family, defined as any persons related by blood, marriage of a man and a woman and/or adoption, is the cornerstone of our American society, and the government is duty bound to protect the integrity of the family unit through legislation and taxation policies.

Sanctity of Life: We believe that the preborn child is a human being deserving the full protection of the law.

National Defense: We believe in a strong and consistent national defense. We believe in victory over, and not accommodation with, tyranny in any form or philosophy.

Right to Bear Arms: We believe in the unqualified right of our citizens to keep and bear arms without the intrusive hand of government.

Victims’ Rights: We believe in the concept of victims’ rights over the rights of any criminal. We support a system of restitution as a deterrent to crime and recidivism.

Term Limitation: We believe that public service is a privilege. We support term limits for public officials, not as an ideal but as a necessity to dissuade career politicians. It is the people who should rule, not an elite with little accountability.

National Sovereignty: We believe in an America first program in which Government’s first concern is the welfare and protection of the American people. We do not believe in trade protectionism but support political leaders who will adopt policies that create fair and competitive trade.

Decentralized Government: We believe in the power of the individual over the power of the state. We believe that only small government truly serves the needs of the people.

If you agree with most of these Principles, but perhaps not all of them, you may want to consider getting involved with the Central Committee.  Or you may want to lobby a member and persuade them to believe your view to be superior to that of the party. 

Many "conservatives" feel that issues such as family and sanctity of life are personal and should not be tossed into the arena of partisan politics.  If you are of that opinion, you may want to get involved to change the party's direction.  Or you may want to consider registering with the Libertarian Party.  Despite its name, the Libertarian Party is conservative on fiscal matters but liberal on social matters.  Most Libertarians believe government has no right to govern within the walls of the home.  Most Republicans would agree however they might also not want the government dictating social policies within the classrooms. 

The Fullerton Sentinel is purely Republican in that we believe the Principles of the Republican Party of Orange County best reflect the best qualities of Fullerton residents.
